Description: Journalists are often referred to as the "watch dogs" of our nation. The Watch Tower will be a monument to the history, integrity, and service of America's journalists as well as a nod to the future of journalism, and the transition we are making to a more modern, "new media" environment. Set on the National Mall, adjacent to the Washington Monument, the Tower will rest between the Monument and the Capitol Building, keeping a "watchful eye" on our citizens and branches of government. The Tower will be made of polished black granite, and is designed as a seemingly unable to stand, inverted cone with an open, concave top in direct opposition with the convex, closed nature of the Washington Monument. From a contrary standpoint, its authoritative presence also serves to highlight the power of the media in our society and, when seen in contrast to the Washington Monument, plays on the idea of who the Big Brother really is. With the addition of guardrails, the viewing deck on top of the tower will be open to the public for an enlightening and inspiring view of the National Mall. It will be about 300 feet tall, a little over half the height of the Washington.
